Is There a Difference between a Recruiter Interview and an Employer Interview?

Insights

If you don’t know the answer to this question, you are missing a trick.

The answer is – yes, there is a difference, and if you realise how the two situations differ, it might make the difference between securing your “dream” job and simply getting the “next” job.

Job searches hinge on being put in front of the right people at the right time, and that is the precise job of a market-expert recruiter at BWP. If you don’t make the most of your recruiter interview, you may not get put through to the employer interview in the first place. Yes, it is that important, and you simply have to approach the recruiter interview in a different way.

Firstly, remember that recruiters are on your side.

At BWP, we aren’t looking to catch you out; we are not looking for reasons that you shouldn’t be hired for a specific role. They are interested in the depth and breadth of your experience and therefore the more forthcoming a candidate is in a recruiter interview, the more chance a recruiter will have of realising their potential. You might not want to digress in an employer interview, but you never know what opportunities might come across a recruiter’s desk in the future, so you have to open yourself up to a recruiter and tell them the whole story (yes, warts and all). In order for our recruiters to suggest a candidate for a role, they have to understand both your strengths and weaknesses. For them to feel secure in their decision, they have to understand what a candidate can (and can’t) do; this helps us to accurately predict whether a candidate will flourish or fail in a particular role. Our recruiters at BWP do not want to set candidates up for failure, so being brutally honest with us in your recruiter interview is vital, even in ways that you might not be with a potential employer.

Every time you talk to your recruiter, whether it is before an interview, or during, the more you let them into your innermost thoughts, the more they can help you. A job search is an incredibly stressful time, and it can actually be incredibly liberating to know that there is someone at the end of the phone who understands what you are going through. The vast majority of phone conversations that we hear in the BWP office involve our recruiters coaching their candidates through issues that they divulge. When you talk to us, we can help. Meet the team

Our final bit of advice for an interview with a recruiter is that a candidate should be organised with regard to their thoughts and their priorities. Unfortunately, recruiters do not have an infinite amount of time to spend with each candidate, much as they would like to, so if the conversation is rambling without a given direction, it is all too easy for a recruiter to switch off and assume that the candidate does not know their own mind. If you don’t know the sort of role you might be suited to, it is very difficult for a recruiter to dig deep enough to work it out. Make it easy for them – share your plan of attack and work with your recruiter to make it happen.
