Rolling Stock Engineering Manager

The post holder will lead the independent engineering team within Rolling Stock. They are the professional head of engineering and will act with diligence and integrity in all that they do imposing a professional approach across the engineering team and into the maintenance teams


  • As a senior member of the Rolling Stock management Team, support to the development of strategic plans is essential
  • Willingness to be flexible to help the organisation to meet changing demands
  • Some out of hours and off-site working will be required
  • Develop a positive health and safety culture throughout the engineering team and its associated areas
  • Ensure that all persons are aware of safety procedures and embed a strong organizational and team culture - developing a positive attitude to health and safety among all staff
  • Ensure a safe working environment by leading on the implementation of Health and Safety policy, systems and procedures
  • Develop and deliver work methods and standards that will ensure health and safety legislation is complied with
  • Embed health and safety within all daily activities

Key Accountabilities:

  • Lead and manage the engineering team delivering professional services across the team to support the delivery of locomotive and wagon availability
  • Monitor the performance of the rolling stock fleet and develop plans to improve its safety performance enhance vehicle availability and reliability and reduce unit cost
  • Custodian of the maintenance management system
  • Custodian of Rolling Stock Standards
  • Provide managerial, technical and supportive training
  • Assess the Rolling Stock team’s performance against standards and procedures including, competence, supplier and audit
  • Provide operational engineering support to each of the workshop supervisors
  • Provide Project Engineers to act as the interface between the engineering team and the procurement teams for strategic Projects
  • Develop and manage the engineering team budget including the operational manpower budget and the capital requirements for the rolling stock assets
  • Identify world leading technologies that are applicable to the operating environment and the strategic direction of the organisation
  • Manager of the engineering change procedure


  • Chartered Engineer or equivalent in a relevant discipline
  • Minimum 10 years rolling stock engineering experience
  • Minimum 5 years' management experience
  • Knowledge of rail systems engineering
  • Knowledge of rolling stock and maintenance techniques is essential
